Wisborough take the first step to pulling off the great escape

Their eight-wicket win at home to Hellingly saw them leapfrog their visitors and move to within six points of safety with two games left to play.

Keymer & Hassocks’ shock win at home to Henfield saw them climb out of the bottom-two, before welcoming Wisborough in a monumental clash this weekend.

Jamie Self hailed his side as they bowled Hellingly out for 155, before easing home with 158-2, but warned there is still work to be done.

He said: “Obviously, coming into this week, we knew what we had to do, and everyone was keen to bounce back. Absolutely, it was very good to get the win, but this is only part one of three.

“We can take a lot of positives from the game. Once again, the guys were fantastic in the field and everyone played their role as Nick (Baron) lead the way with five wickets, but he was supported brilliant up front by James Rainford, and then everyone else chipped in.

“As I said this is only the first step. Nothing has changed, our destiny is in our own hands and that’s exactly how you’d want it to be.

“Nothing is going to come easily and we have to go into this week just concentrating on putting in a good performance.”

Top scores of Greg Devlin (46) and Gavin Sunderland (47*) helped Hellingly to their total after struggling at 70-5.

Baron claimed 5-32 with the ball before hitting 30 in Wisborough’s reply.

Nerves were rattled when opener Martin Hopkins went for a duck, but 44 not out from Self, Baron’s knock and an unbeaten 70 from Matt Scott saw them home in 24.5 overs.

Self added: “It was nice to get a few runs, but credit to Nick who played positively up front and then a great innings from Matt that really took the game away from Hellingly.”
