ADVICE and support encouraging older people to stay safe, well and warm this winter is coming under one roof for a special event.
The Big Winter Warm Up is being organised by Impact Initiatives in conjunction with Horsham District Council.
The first event of its kind, it will be jam packed with information and advice to help residents cope during the winter months.
Featuring energy saving advisers, well-being MOTs, a yoga taster session, community safety officers, Steyning nurses and the prevention assessment team, the free event will be held at the Dingemans Centre, Shooting Field, Steyning, on Wednesday, from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
Sue Rogers, Horsham’s cabinet member for a safer and healthier district, said: “I’m delighted that Horsham District Council together with Impact Initiatives has been able to bring together so many organisations who can offer real help and support for our local residents.
“Winter can be a difficult time for many of us, but there are lots of organisations who can help make it safer, healthier and warmer.”
As well as advice and support, there will be a chance to chat to PCSOs from Sussex Police, cookery demonstrations and a café special offer of soup and a roll for £3. The event will be supported by a wealth of partners and there will be top energy-saving information from the Green Doctors.
The council’s new Get Ready for Winter Guide has been revised and updated to include details on how to stay safe in flood conditions, as well as how best to cope with snow.
Donna Bailey, older people’s services manager at the centre, said: “The Big Winter Warm Up is also a perfect opportunity to come along to find out more about the Dingemans Centre, which offers a range of innovative and forward thinking activities and services for people aged 55-plus, including classes, demonstrations, speakers and trips.
“The centre is a lively and inspiring place to be with activities designed to keep both minds and bodies active, as well as providing a café service offering freshly-cooked meals on the premises. We are open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday.”
Details about Steady On, a new strength and balance course, will be available at the event.
