HHC Motorsport’s Will Palmer kept his cool in treacherous conditions at Brands Hatch to win the BRDC Formula 4 Winter Championship.
The Southwater racer secured the title in style in the final race with Gaetano di Mauro second in the championship and Rodrigo Fonseca third.
All three went into the final race with a chance of taking the title, but it was Palmer’s to lose as he needed to finish eighth in the race to guarantee the crown.
It was far from simple for Palmer though, who started from pole position for the final race, but had a slow start and then had to take avoiding action when di Mauro and Fonseca touched, with Fonseca forced out of the race and the title battle.
After falling to fourth and then dealing with a safety car, Palmer marched into the distance, taking the win by 6.2 seconds from Jordan Albert, who capitalised on a last corner mistake from di Mauro, who finished third.
Palmer’s title success means he secures free-of-charge entry to all rounds of the 2015 BRDC F4 Championship. He said: “It feels great to secure the Winter Championship. It’s been a very tricky weekend, especially at the start but the team have done really well to come back and help me secure the title.
“There was a lot of pressure heading into the weekend because even though I’d won the first three races at Snetterton, Gaetano had finished second each time and then won the last race.
“It’s been a fantastic battle and it feels like in half the races I’ve been going wheel-to-wheel with Gaetano and the racing has been very fair. We go into next year looking very strong.”
Palmer secured the title having won four races and three additional podium places from the eight races.
Earlier in the day, Rodrigo Fonseca clinched his second successive win with a dominant performance in the third race of the weekend, finishing well clear of Palmer and di Mauro.
