It's amazing what you can find under the bed.

From dust devils to old socks whose partners have long since gone to hosiery heaven – or even a 34ft well.

This picture was taken in 1964 and shows Mr PM Hunt, of the Hunters Lodge Hotel, Lavant, with his 10-year-old daughter, Fiona, peering into the well.

The appearance of the well naturally came as quite a shock to Mr Hunt, as the floor had appeared nice and sturdy and had been overlaid with tiles – not to mention the fact people had been sleeping above it for years.

He spotted it when the floor started to collapse.

A report in the Chichester Observer said: “It appears that when piped water arrived in Lavant the old well was sealed over, coated with pitch and tiles laid.

“At last the damp had caused the wooden cover to rot, and the tiles had sagged and cracked.”

Mr Hunt ensured the well was

sealed off with concrete – but you have to wonder if the new owners know what lies beneath one of their beds...

Meanwhile, over at Graylingwell Hospital, one of the quickest awards ceremonies in history had taken place.

The woman responsible was Alderman Mrs AF Eastland, acting chairman of Graylingwell Hospital Management Committee, who was presenting nurses with prizes, certificates, and badges.

Mrs Eastland gave an extremely short address in which she said she had consented to present the prizes on the condition there would be no speech-making.

The whole thing was over in 15 minutes.

There should be more politicians like Mrs Eastland...
