Was Olive, 91, oldest driver in Mid Sussex in 1983?

In 1983, the Mid Sussex Times asked if anyone knew of an older driver than Miss Olive Lowe. The retired headteacher was 91-years-old when the newspaper spoke to her, and had been driving for 60 years.

She was made an honorary member of the AA and her licence was due to expire when she was 92.

When Olive first got behind the wheel in 1923, cars were not required to have speedometers and a traffic census showed there were more bicycles on the roads than cars. The census showed there were 383,525 cars on the roads of Great Britain that year – but that was soon to change.

By 1930, there were more than one million and, by 1938 that number had doubled.

Today, there are an estimated 31.7million vehicles on the road.
