RESIDENTS turned out in force for the Steyning parish meeting called last night.

Friends of the Memorial Playing Field and others who want to protect the town’s ‘jewel in the crown’ were among those gathered in Springwells, in High Street.

Supporters of Steyning Parish Council’s skatepark stood in protest outside the hotel, holding a banner marked ‘MPF skate park’.

Inside, the corridor was crowded and the room booked for the meeting already full by the start time of 7pm.

The meeting was opened and adjourned to Toad Lodge, Newham Lane, where marquees had been put up in the front garden.

Lynn Atherly was elected chairman of the meeting, which was held to vote on a motion to call a referendum.

The motion agreed the question: “Do YOU want the Parish Council to build a skatepark on The Memorial Playing Field (The Cricket Field) Village Green?”.

Horsham District Council will now organise the ballot, which is expected to take place in about a month’s time at the Steyning Centre.

After the meeting, Mike Kelly, one of the skatepark supporters, said: “We feel that the parish council should now be left to conduct a survey of residents in which this issue can be put to the town in a fair and balanced way.”
