Members of Crawley’s Philippines community are working with the Gatwick Diamond Rotary Club to raise money for victims of the typhoon which has ravaged the island.
Organised by community fundraiser Maria Hains, residents and Rotary Club members will be collecting at the Tesco stores in Three Bridges and Hookwodd on Saturday and Sunday (November 16/17).
Typhoon Haiyan devastated large parts of the Philippines when it struck last Friday.
It is believed to have been the strongest typhoon ever to hit land, with wind speeds of 235km per hour.
The confirmed death toll stands at 2,300 and is expected to rise. Some 11 million people have been affected.
Geoff Williamson, of Gatwick Diamond Rotary, said: “The main aid priorities are food, water and emergency shelter. Rotary is the best placed organisation to help in this scenario.
“In the Philippines there are 10 Rotary districts with nearly 800 clubs and over 20,000 members.
“All aid raised by Rotary will be channelled by these clubs to ensure that help gets quickly to where it is most needed.”
