Emergency services were called to the incident at the Co-op in Guildford Road, at the site of the old Tanfield garage, at around 11.15am.
A spokesman for the ambulance service said a man in his 20s fell from a ladder and landed on his back.
He was treated at the scene for multiple injuries, including a head injury.
He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for further checks.
An ambulance and a paramedic car were sent to the scene along with the Air Ambulance, the spokesman added.
