Crawley’s second annual STEMfest was launched with a display of all things engineered yesterday (Thursday May 16).
The event at Oriel High School was attended by members of Crawley Borough Council, Central Sussex College, the outreach department of Science and Engineering at the University of Brighton and STEMfest Sussex.
STEMfest Ambassadors - engineering students at the University of Brighton - provided a spectacle with a Dalek, a water squirting and farting robot and a fighting robot which has won tournaments on the BBC’s Robot Wars.
Attendees also tried their hand at controlling some remote control cars made by Oriel High School pupils.
The pupils made the vehicles earlier that day with the ambassadors, using only the essential mechanics and scrap materials.
Council leader Cllr Bob Lanzer had a close encounter with the Dalek, which trundled around menacing all that stood in its way.
He said: “I believe when you put science, technology, engineering and maths together it makes Britain great.
“It’s really important for the future of the country.”
