ARUNDEL Castle came under siege today as three prominent living history groups portrayed a breathtaking battle.

The French army moved in, in an attempt to overtake the historic fortress, while English troops, under Edward IV, bravely fought to defend it.

Visitors were treated to scenes recreating a dramatic battle, complete with authentic costumes bringing the Middle Ages to life.

There was the opportunity to enter the tented encampment to meet the soldiers in between battles and witness the sights and sounds of the period.

Although there was no historical siege at Arundel Castle in the 15th Century, the three-day event aims to show the importance of artillery in taking a castle, as well as being a battlefield weapon.

Other displays included the Distant Trumpets Story Teller with tremendous tales from the period and a demonstration of historic weaponry.

Castle manager Bryan McDonald commented: “We are so proud that the castle is involved in such a gripping interpretation of history, it is one of our most anticipated events of the year – even the castle team do not know the final outcome of the battle!”

The Medieval Siege continues tomorrow and Monday. Entrance is £20 for adults, £17.50 students, £11 children, to include a visit to the castle bedrooms, main castle rooms, castle keep, the grounds and Collector Earl’s Garden.
