People waiting eagerly to be among the first to cross the bridge and many spoke of their relief to have a ready access between Shoreham town centre and Shoreham Beach back.

Paul Reader, Osborne project manager, admitted they had been through tough times, including a harsh winter and problems when the glass supplier went bust.

But the £9.8m was now complete and he praised his workmen for their efforts.

One of the first members of the public to cross was Gudrun Hansen, who has lived in Shoreham all her life.

Gudrun, an IT consultant, of Gordon Road, made her way to Shoreham Beach in front of a crowd of hundreds.

“It is exquisite,” she said. “It is so open, it changes the vista of Shoreham altogether.”

See next week’s Shoreham Herald for a special report on the opening ceremony.
