A man in his 20s from Crawley is in a life threatening condition after he was found on fire in a graveyard in Horley on Monday night (February 17).
Church members at St Bartholomew’s Church, in Church Road, rushed to help the man.
And the vicar revealed that the church was only being used that evening due to a double booking elsewhere.
Rev Calvert Prentis, Horley parish rector said: “St Wilfrid’s (Church) were having their District Church Committee (DCC) meeting and asked to use St Bart’s.
“There was a mix up with the bookings and DCC clashed with Zumba.
“No one would have found him.”
He added: “Thank God it was rainy and the grass was wet. He rolled around, we put a duvet on him and the fire was extinguished.”
Local officers from the Reigate and Banstead Safer Neighbourhood Team are assisting detectives with their investigation by carrying out enquiries in the local area.
