Sussex Police are waiting to assess the damage to a house in Itchingfield after a serious fire in the early hours of this morning (Saturday, April 23).

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a roof fire at a property on Bashurst Hill shortly after 00.30am.

A Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed the fire is now out but there is ‘significant structural damage’.

Officers are waiting for confirmation the building is safe before assessing the damage, although the spokesperson said there was no initial indications of any suspicious circumstances.

Two fire crews from Horsham and one from Billingshurst were initially sent to the scene, and a fourth crew from Crawley later joined.

Relief crews remain at the site and Bashurst Hill is still closed in both directions at the A264 Five Oaks Road junction.
