The sum was raised by the 2017 Arundel Mayor’s Charity Ball, which was held on Friday, February 10, in support of MACE. This is a fund used by the Mayor to give to local causes throughout the year.

The theme for the Ball this year was ‘The Swinging Sixties’, and guests were invited to dress in line with the theme or wear black tie.

Mayor, Councillor James Stewart, said “My two chosen charities this year are DePaul International for the work they do for homeless and marginalized people and Home-Start Arun, which supports families within Arun who need a litte help”.

Her Grace the Duchess of Norfolk is patron of both charities and attended the Ball held at Arundel Town Hall.

During arrival drinks at the ball guests were entertained by Will Hall on piano and Harry Caiger on guitar, in the Holmes Chamber.

This was followed by dinner in the grand Atherley Chamber on three long banquet tables joined in a big “E”, surrounded by large portraits of previous Mayors and some Dukes of Norfolk and lit by the rare ‘Gaselier’.

In his speech, Mayor James Stewart, started with a loyal toast to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate her Sapphire Jubilee.

He then went on to recall other events resonating this year from 60 years earlier in 1957: It was the year the Cavern Club opened in Liverpool starting the whole swinging sixties music scene; it was the year that The Arundel Castle ship made its 200th voyage (only to be scrapped a year or two later) and it was also the year that Arundel Football Club won the Division One Cup for the first time!

The Master of Ceremonies, Mark Lanaghan welcomed the guests and guided them up to dinner, but then surprised them all when he broke into song for twenty minutes starting with some sixties classics and finishing with two opera arias.

The evening would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors CA Technologies, The Town House, Pallant of Arundel, Arundel Brewery, West Sussex Hog Roast Evonprints and the Hanover Band. #
