SOUTHWICK Players have won the top prize at the Brighton and Hove Arts Council’s Drama Awards for the second year running.

Director Sally Diver accepted the Best Overall Production award for Be My Baby from actress Kate Dyson, the adjudicator, at the ceremony in BHASVIC last night.

She said: “It is such a good play. It is an all female cast. It is a great one. It is about getting the right cast and I did.”

The players, who perform at The Barn Theatre in Southwick, won four other awards on the night, including best crew and best publicity.

Sally worked with Martin Oakley to create the set, which impressed Kate with its three levels. She said it really gave the audience a feel for the mother and baby home.

Sally and Martin collected the Best Set award together, then Martin returned to the stage to receive the award for Best Technical Achievement, for having running water in the laundry room.

Wick Theatre Company, which also performs at The Barn, received five nominations for Rope.

Both Derek Fraser and Matthew Arnold were nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Sarah Frost was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, along with Alice Wesby from Southwick Players.

Cherry Fraser and Maggi Pierce, Wick’s wardrobe team, were nominated for the Best Costume award and the company was also nominated for Best Publicity.

Kate said: “These awards are subjective, they are not the be all and end all of anything. Most of all, they are a celebration of all the work the companies do. I am very committed to keeping the arts alive in this age of austerity.”
