Son stole £90,000 from his elderly mother

A SON who stole more than £90,000 from his own elderly mother was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for one year, at Chichester Crown Court on May 27.

Robert Donald Bristow, 67, of Meadowfield Close, Halton, Lancaster, was charged with the theft of £92,000 belonging to his mother, Beatrice Bristow, of Ullswater Road in Lancing, over the space of two years between 2010 and 2012.

Bristow pleaded guilty to the charge.

As well as a suspended prison sentence, Bristow was ordered to pay compensation of £28,000 to his mother and £64,000 to West Sussex County Council.

The prosecution followed an investigation by detectives from the West Sussex CID adult protection team.

Bristow was also charged with a count of fraud while holding power of attorney over his mother’s finances.

He was accused of dishonestly abusing his position in order to make financial gain, by claiming that his mother’s house belonged to him alone.

This matter is yet to be resolved by the courts.
