The historic Caueway was closed off to traffic while school staff, led by headteacher Shelley Dutson who took to the microphone to introduce each year group before they performed their dance.

The 45 minute long dancing event heralded the first day of St Mary’s Church’s annual flower festival which has become one of the leading events on the town’s calendar.

It has 32 displays, prepared by arrangers from St Mary’s and other local churches, schools and businesses.

The theme this year is Jesu Joy - celebrating the life of Christ according to St Luke’ with each arrangement representing a stage in Christ’s life.

Organisers of the festival, which finishes on Sunday, were grateful to all their sponsors for making this possible.

In addition to St Mary’s, flower arrangers are from Brighton Road Baptist Church, Holy Trinity, St Marks, St Andrews Methodist Church, United Reformed Church, St Johns RC Church, London Road Methodist Church, St Mary’s School and St Mary’s Nursery and Lighthouse, the St Mary’s Sunday school.
