Shoreham Churches Together is set to launch the Shoreham Gospels Project, and is inviting the whole community to get involved.

The project’s aim is for different people, young and old, to copy a few verses, producing a manuscript of the Gospels handwritten by the people of Shoreham.

The four Gospels will then be bound professionally into one volume, which will be blessed and used for the first time at a Shoreham Churches Together service at St Mary de Haura on Sunday, October 29. Afterwards the Shoreham Gospels will move round the Shoreham churches.#

Revd James Grant, the chairman of Shoreham Churches Together, said: “The process, which will help people to be more aware of the message in the Gospels, is very important. We are planning to have some writing workshops where those taking part can do their copying together, which will make it an enjoyable social experience. Through this exercise we will have an opportunity to re-engage with the Bible, giving an opportunity to reflect on one part of the Bible and also be part of something bigger than ourselves.”

Jeannette Simpson, one of the project co-ordinators, said: “A copy made centuries ago became the famous Lindisfarne Gospels. We hope that by creating our own, modern version we will reconnect with the spirituality of those who spent their lives copying the Bible back then. We would like the finished Gospels to be valued by the local community as something they themselves have put together, and treasured for generations.”

Copying started at the beginning of this week, and groups and individuals are invited to join in. Even very young children can contribute by colouring in pictures used to complete a page, and it is hoped that each chapter will start with an artistic and colourful initial letter. It is planned that the copying will be finished by August 7. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Revd James Grant by emailing frjames.grant@gmail.com or telephoning 01273 979811.
