SHOPPERS were evacuated yesterday (Thursday, January 19) after a gas leak in a Storrington shopping centre.

Firefighters evacuated visitors to the Old Mill shopping centre in Old Mill Drive after services were called at 2.37pm.

The road and surrounding area cordoned off while the Southern Gas Network carried out an investigation.

Engineers worked throughout the night and the gas leak was repaired by 7pm that evening.

However, investigations into how the leak started are still on going today (Friday January 20).

A spokesperson from Sussex Police said: “Police were called at 2.40pm yesterday (Thursday 19 January) by the Gas Board following a report of a significant leak in Old Mill Square, Storrington.

“Officers assisted West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service with evacuating the shopping centre whilst the Gas Board located the source of the leak.

“The area was declared safe and the road re-opened at about 9pm.”
