It was difficult to find a parking space, at The Roundabout Hotel on Thursday 6th March, as ladies arrived from all directions for their second Probus Lunch Meeting.

The Membership, from 24 at the Foundation Meeting last month, had nearly doubled and a waiting list for potential new members had been established.

During the pre-lunch drinks session the ladies were joined by Malcolm Bennett, President of The Probus Club of Storrington & District, who had previously offered welcome support, for the newly formed ladies’ group, and had therefore been invited to meet them. The ladies greatly appreciated his time and we were all delighted to see him.

The after lunch Speaker was The Chairman of Horsham District Council Philip Circus and the title of his talk was ‘A Councillor’s Lot Is….’. Philip spoke about the ups and downs of public service; which was listened to intensely by the membership. He also gave us an insight into local planning proposals and to the extent to which our local councillor’s endeavoured to preserve our green spaces.

After some prime examples had been outlined one lady wondered why anyone would ever volunteer for public service when so many obstacles could be in the way – we all thought the same.

Other than that Philip recounted the great personal highs and the immense satisfaction when he was successful in supporting and defending local issues successfully. A most interesting talk and we could have spent many hours debating various issues – thank you Philip.

At our next meeting, on Thursday April 10th, the Speaker will be Caroline Couch from Biffa who will speak about The Management of Household Waste in West Sussex – we look forward to meeting her.
