The Department for Transport announced today it was supporting plans for a third runway at the London based airport instead of plans for a second runway at Gatwick.

HDC has been opposed to a second runway at Gatwick because of the ‘very considerable detrimental effect’ it claims it would have on the physical, social and the economic environment.

Council Leader Ray Dawe, said: “We have made it clear that a second runway at Gatwick would have a fundamental impact on the general character of the district and on the lives of everyone who works and lives here.

“We are therefore relieved that our concerns appear to have been listened to and understood.

“We will nevertheless continue to support Gatwick’s development as a single runway airport - recognising the importance of the airport’s success to the local economy.”
