Running club turn out in force for marathon

Colin Shaw came second in his age group (70-74) in what proved to be a very successful day for Mel's Milers at this year's Brighton Marathon.

The Christ’s Hospital-based running club fielded 17 runners in the annual south coast event and posted a number of impressive times.

Paula Reeves led the team home in 3 hours 49 minutes closely followed by Ed Walden, Isobel Clarke, Steve Wilson and Catherine Low (all 3 hours 53), with Mark Chopin (3 hours 57) and Kathryn Hayhurst (4 hours) not far behind.

Martin Sanderson (4h 26), Jane Stephens (4h31), Rick Duffy (4h32), Alistair Fitzgerald (4h35), Edwina Chandaman (5h22), Amanda Bond (5h22) and Sharon Burchett (5h38) all posted strong times too.

But it was Colin who took the plaudits in what he says is his final turnout at the marathon distance with a time of 4 hours 42 minutes.

“I have to say that one or two logistical matters apart, I thoroughly enjoyed my Brighton Marathon experience. The atmosphere was vibrant, the support positive and uplifting, water and nutrition stations were plentiful, they even got the weather spot on – it was a perfect way to finish my road marathon career.”

Mel’s Milers were running in memory of former club treasurer and runner Dawn Piechoczek, who died last year of cancer. Over £3,000 was raised for the Sussex Cancer Fund and Macmillan Cancer Support. £3,000 was also raised by Amanda Bond and Edwina Chandaman for the Hospice of St Francis, Berkhamsted, in memory of Amanda’s mother.
