Road safety demonstrations at Felpham college

Year 11 students with two members of the Box Clever cast

Year 12 and 13 students attended the ‘Safe Drive, Stay Alive’ workshop held in Worthing at the beginning of the month, and now Year 11 students have received coaching and advice on the importance of road safety, through a national theatre company ‘Box Clever’. They watched a one-hour drama and then took part in a question and answer session.

Based on a specific case study concerning two young people, both aged 18 and in love, the performance charted their journey from a party to a seemingly inevitable fate. With audience participation, the company re-enacted the scene to investigate how things could be different, if only the passenger had taken steps to make the drive safer.

Box Clever, a touring theatre company who work around the Country, aim to reduce the number of young casualties injured or killed on the roads through running this workshop with local schools and senior students. The afternoon definitely provided the students with plenty of food for thought on the importance of road safety and the possible, and very real, dangers affecting young drivers and passengers.

Mark Anstiss, headteacher, said: “At Felpham we want to ensure all students are aware of the importance of road safety and that making the right choices is crucial. If you are learning to drive or getting in a car with a young driver, you are potentially putting yourself and others at risk. We want to encourage all our students to be as safe on the roads as possible. Thank you to Box Clever who gave a fantastic performance.”
