Trained volunteers from the charity’s Speak Out. Stay Safe service delivered an assembly to Key Stage One pupils to teach them about abuse in all its forms and how to keep themselves safe.

The volunteers will deliver the special assembly to pupils at 1pm on November 14.

So far, the service has spoken to more than 18,000 children in more than 150 schools across West Sussex.

The service launched in 2011 after research showed the majority of children who contact Childline are over 11 years of age.

Many said that the abuse had begun years before they picked up the phone.

The aim is to educate a generation of children about abuse in all its forms, including bullying, sexual abuse, neglect and domestic abuse, potentially before abuse starts.

Amanda Rocca, Sussex area coordinator for Speak Out. Stay Safe, said: “We know that at least two children in every primary school classroom will have experienced some form of abuse or neglect – a truly shocking statistic.

“But just imagine if we could give these children the knowledge to prevent, the confidence to speak out and the courage to seek help if they need it.

“By visiting every school every two years, we could prevent children from experiencing abuse, one generation at a time.”

The service is completely free and the NSPCC is looking for more people in West Sussex to volunteer to go into schools.
