The current Conservative chairman of Horsham District Council was elected to the county council for the Storrington division after a by-election yesterday.
Philip Circus beat off a strong challenge from the UKIP candidate John Wallace by 1,037 to 729 votes, and will represent the area at West Sussex County Council.
Yesterday (Thursday September 26) only 22.53 per cent of residents turned out to vote.
Other candidates were Nick Hopkinson (Lib Dem) of Steyning who polled 364 votes; and James Edward Doyle (Green) of Worthing who received 131 votes.
The by-election was called after the death of Frank Wilkinson who died after a short battle with cancer.
