A CHILDREN’S swimming scheme run by a water company in the South East has received Parliamentary recognition as it celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Southern Water’s ‘Learn to Swim’ programme involves qualified swimming instructors teaching children aged between four and 12.

It operates at more than 80 pools and clubs across the region and has helped more than 600,000 children learn to swim since 1992.

Conservative MP Dr Julian Lewis tabled the Parliamentary Early Day Motion in early February, now signed by 25 other MPs, praising Southern Water’s initiative.

“This is a fantastic endorsement of Learn to Swim,” said Geoff Loader, Southern Water’s Director of Communications. “We are grateful to Dr Lewis for publicising our efforts to help teach children a vital and potentially life-saving skill.”

On board as ambassadors are two Olympians - Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew and five-time Paralympic gold medallist Sascha Kindred.
