AFTER a long association with Southwick Players, president Nigel Bubloz is about to make his debut appearance on stage.

Usually found backstage, Nigel is more used to moving sets, placing props, producing shows, carrying out company business and attending meetings for the Players.

Now, for the first time, he will be treading the boards, playing a tourist in Lettice and Lovage, Peter Shaffer’s charming and hilarious Tony-winning comedy of manners.

Nigel said: “I watch our extremely talented acting members deliver some amazing shows from the wings backstage and decided it was time I had a go myself.

“It is quite a different experience actually, being part of the cast, and rehearsing together has been great fun and really opened my eyes to the dedication of our cast and our directors.”

Shaffer built a reputation as a master of drama with plays such as Equus, Royal Hunt of the Sun, and Amadeus. He wrote Black Comedy in 1964 but it was 20 years before he wrote another comedic play – Lettice and Lovage.

Players press officer Amanda Solomon said: “In the opening scenes, we meet Lettice, an expert on Elizabethan cuisine and medieval weaponry – an indefatigable but rather daffy enthusiast of history and the theatre.

“As tour guide of Fustian House, one of the least stately of Wiltshire’s stately homes, she theatrically embellishes its historical past, ultimately coming up on the radar of stoic Lotte Schoen, an inspector from the Preservation Trust. Neither impressed nor entertained by Lettice’s freewheeling history lessons, Lotte fires her but Lettice is not prepared to go without a fight!”

Lettice and Lovage comes to The Barn Theatre, Southwick Street, Southwick, from Wednesday, April 15, to Saturday, April 18, at 7.30pm daily with a 2.30pm Saturday matinée. Call the box office on 01273 597094 or visit www.southwickplayers.org.uk for tickets, priced £11.
