PICTURES: Yapton spring flower show

Staged in the Village Hall on Saturday, the show had 236 entries, a figure markedly above that of the previous year, as was the number of participants.

Show secretary David Donovan said: “At 42, this second figure included four newcomers to showing, among whom was a two-year old child.

“A number of exhibits were entered from outside the immediate area, with a strong contingent from Southwick, joined by those from Hampshire, Kent and Essex.

“The first impressions upon entering the Village Hall must have been favourable. A fine show of daffodils complemented by a pronounced perfume greeted the visitor, plus the supporting role played by other cut flowers and a great variety of potted plants and vegetables added to the horticultural content of the show.”

The flower-arranging section was small but did attract a first-time competitor. The cookery classes were well supported, with the male competitors having considerable success against the ladies.

The handicraft classes drew a small number of entries but the photography was better supported and had a lot of public attention.

The schedule finished with the children’s exhibits, with five young people involved in staging in this category.

Mr Donovan added: “The public viewing in the afternoon attracted more than 100 visitors, who undoubtedly enjoyed the event as a visual spectacle before going on to attend the side-stalls with their offerings of garden plants; breads, cakes and confectionery; crafts and jewellery; a bottle tombola and the raffle.

“The society added one or two more members to its numbers during the day.”

Vice-president Stella Whitelock presented the awards and Mr Donovan went home the winner of two trophies, the Harry March Cup for most points in the horticultural classes and the Pratt Trophy for prizes in the cookery section.

The Junior Spring Cup went to eight-year-old Cerys Hier, who won three first prizes.

Other first prize winners were ‘Mac’ MacCulloch, Pam Collie, Eva Pendreich, Terry Booker, Mary Carmel Pardi, Roy Phillips, Irene Jordan, Anne Hollis, Elaine Cordingley, Graham Coomber, Diane Booker, Malcolm Paradine, Sheila French, Heather Booth, Derek Dukes, Ian Watts, John Knight, Ted Coomber and Jacob Chapillion Gold.

The early summer show will be staged in Yapton Village Hall on June 17, with roses and sweet peas as principal cut flowers.
