PLANS for a giant picnic on Steyning’s Memorial Playing Field have been approved, with conditions.
Steyning Parish Council’s finance and community committee supported the event, subject to a meeting with the organisers.
Committee chairman Tim Lloyd said at the meeting last week they needed to discuss marshalling cars, policing alcohol and access for the mobile skate park.
He said: “It is entirely open to everyone, it is a community event. We need to remind organisers that no alcohol is allowed on the playing field.”
The event is being organised by supporters of the council’s skate park plans but it is designed to bring everyone together.
A representative from the Friends of Memorial Playing Field, which has its own plans for a skate park on the leisure centre site, said the picnic was welcomed but asked for reassurance the event would be for the whole community.
Picnic supporter Peter Walsh responded: “I don’t think there will be any trouble. Hopefully, there will be people talking to each other. It is for the whole community. It is for all the people of Steyning to be reunited.”
The event, which will include Horsham District Council’s mobile skate park, will be held on Sunday, September 8, from midday to 4pm.
It will also feature an ice cream van and pizza van on the car park. Car park usage will be restricted and there will be no parking allowed on the Memorial Playing Field.
