VISITORS to this year’s Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Shoreham Airshow can get first world war memorabilia analysed for free.

Historian Nick Ward will have a stand focusing on the Royal Sussex Regiment as part of West Sussex Library Service’s Lottery-funded project researching the lives of people caught up in the war.

He is offering a free service to airshow visitors, on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, and will be recording data for the project, not just on the Royal Sussex Regiment but from anyone living in Sussex, too.

He said: “People can bring in postcards, medals, etc., and we will look at them for free and help to identify them.

“We will be talking to people and recording data to pass on to the project.”

Mr Ward is currently touring West Sussex collecting information for the project, charting the impact of the first world war on residents.

A travelling exhibition will tour county libraries next summer, marking the centenary of the outbreak of the war.

The results of the project will also provide a dedicated website to help researchers and to trace family histories, as well as a new book entitled West Sussex at War 1914-18.
