Manure catches fire

A PILE of manure at stables in Upper Beeding had to be damped down when it caught fire on Tuesday afternoon.

The heap, 4m x 7m x 6m, was damped down and turned over using a mechanical digger.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue explained problems occasionally occurred with manure heaps because they heat internally.

“They tend to smoke rather than flames, but it needs to be controlled for safety.”

Steyning firefighters were at the stables, in Smugglers Lane, for two hours from just after 5pm onwards.

They used one back pack water sprayer, a drag rake, small tools and buckets of water to put out the fire.
