At their recent business meeting, Horsham Lions Club presented a framed Certificate of Appreciation to Richard Churchman, who up to April 2014 was the grounds manager at Christ’s Hospital School.
In asking Lion president Clare Wilson to make the presentation, immediate past president Tom Osborne made the following introductions:
“Richard Churchman from the very outset of The Colts six-a-side cricket competition, some 25 years ago was a strong supporter of this event as he perceived that not only was it giving tremendous support to Colts Cricket in West Sussex and Surrey but it enable Christ’s Hospital School the opportunity, by hosting the event, to put something back into the Community they have served for more than 100 years.
Richard, with the support of the groundsman, Peter Sands, provided up to four grass pitches for the event as it steadily grew which enabled the reputation to be enhanced over the years.
“Whenever the school needed encouragement to host the event Richard was always there to provide good reasons for continuing the relationship for the benefit of local youth and for the Horsham Community as a whole.
“In the circumstances Horsham Lions Club Members believed they should make this award to Richard Churchman, in recognition of 25 years of selfless service to the Colts Cricket Competition and to the Horsham community.
Lion Tom, as joint Co-Ordinator with Peter Garland of The Identilam Colts Cricket League sadly reported that after 26 years Christ’s Hospital Enterprises announced are unable to continue to host the annual six-a-side competition from 2015.
“Whilst we are actively looking for a new venue, preferably locally, if any school or club can provide four grass cricket pitches for one Sunday in June or early July 2015 please contact Lion Tom Osborne on 01403 241167.”
In addition in recognition of members of The Strawford Centre’s work of collecting unwanted spectacles from the Lions bins in the Opticians’ in Horsham and organising for them to be transported to Lions District Spectacles Centre in Chichester they were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation on Tuesday August 5.
Lion Tom Osborne, standing in for Lion President Clare Wilson, said: “The service provided by The Strawford Centre Clients, all of which are adults with learning difficulties, for more than 20 years was truly fantastic because they provide an important link, which enables all the spectacles to be assessed at the Spectacles Centre run by The Lions of Kent, Surrey and Sussex, (District 105SE), and sent off for use to Third World Countries. You are all doing great work serving. not only the community in which you live, but also helping those in need in the wider world.
“If any members of the general public have any prescription spectacles or indeed hearing aids they no longer use please deposit them in the blue bins located in a number of Opticians’, particularly Boots in West Street, they will be put to good use.”
Horsham Lions are always in need of recruiting new members, in order to continue their work.
