The leader of the county council Liberal Democrats in Horsham has expressed disappointment at the surge in votes for UKIP.

Morwen Millson was re-elected for Horsham Riverside, receiving 1053 votes, with Conservative David Scozzafava in second with 683 votes and UKIP’s Douglas Rands in third with 620.

Labour’s David Hide received 239 and the Peace Party’s Jim Duggan 102.

She thanked her constituents for re-electing her, and said she was pleased to see Lib Dems Nigel Dennis and David Sheldon re-elected.

However, she felt for colleagues who had lost votes to UKIP candidates.

She said: “I’m very concerned for colleagues that have been run very close or lost or come in third to candidates that have done nothing to gain support and have been entirely dependent on a national campaign and media coverage.”

The Liberal Democrats lost Roffey and Bramber Castle.
