As part of Places for People’s ongoing commitment to the health and wellbeing of the local community, leisure centres in the Horsham contract are proud to be supporting National Fitness Day on Friday September 26.

There will be a variety of different activities on offer, aimed at getting families involved in fun, regular exercise.

In a recent study by UK Active, it was found that 25% of adults in the UK are completely inactive; they do no exercise or activities that raise their heart rate moderately. The health risks of such inactivity are numerous, including an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and some cancers.

National Fitness Day is a national UK Active event, aimed at inspiring people to try out exercise.

Research in the field has shown that people who work out in groups are far more likely to enjoy and stick at regular exercise than those who work out alone.

The social benefits of the situation create an enjoyable and positive atmosphere for people to have fun whilst exercising. Local Places for People leisure centres are inviting customers to try some free activities, hoping to inspire the whole family into regular exercise.

“The benefits of regular exercise speak for themselves,” says Sophie Pateman, Contract Activities Manager for the Horsham Places for People contract. “You feel better in yourself, you’re able to do more and you want to do it! National Fitness Day is a fantastic way to get active and we’re offering fun activities for people of all fitness levels to enjoy.”

Horsham district residents have a variety of exciting and unusual activities to try, including trampolining and a tennis tournament at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre; boxfit and kettlebell workout tasters at The Pavilions in the Park; health MOTs with Horsham District Council’s Wellbeing team at Billingshurst Leisure Centre; and studio cycling and a basketball tournament at Steyning Leisure Centre. Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre also has a selection of free group workout classes running on Saturday September 27, with a fancy dress Back to Skool theme!
