ATTENTION to detail and colourful displays impressed judges in this year’s shop window competition.

Harry and Pip Goring braved pouring rain during their judging walkabout on Saturday, viewing entrants in both the foodie shops and non-foodie categories.

The Steyning and District Food and Drink Festival competition on a best food theme saw a variety of displays, all of superb quality, showing the time and effort that had been put in.

Winner of the foodie section was The Cobblestone Tea House, which used a wartime theme, to tie in with the anniversary of the Great War.

Mrs Reina Alston, from the festival committee, said: “The meticulous attention to detail was incredible. Old posters, models and memorabilia were in place, which had obviously been difficult to source.

“The tea house won last year, but our judges were completely unaware of this, so it was a completely unbiased decision. What a reputation Eddie Woodward and his team are building for producing first class entries.”

Second place went to Hut Stuff for their window of seafood, maritime objects and fun sign hoardings. Chez Joel was third with a window of ‘good enough to eat’ produce, including a golden pastry pie that came out of the oven just in time to be placed as the Judges arrived.

In the non-foodie section, first prize went to St Barnabas House charity shop, where a battered edition of a Mrs Beaton cookbook took pride of place.

Second prize went to The Baby Boutique in Cobblestone Walk, which featured an outstanding beach barbecue in its tiny window. Oxfam, in third place, took a completely different slant to the food theme, focusing on food and famine by comparing the food available in the Sub-Saharan Africa continent to the food wasted in the rich countries of the world.
