Have your say

Horsham firefighters turned out in force today as they stood outside the fire station, in Hurst Road, to protest against their current pension plan.

The protest was part of the national strike action being undertaken by members of the Fire Brigade Union across the country due to an ongoing dispute with the government over pensions.

FBU secretary for West Sussex Francis Bishop said: “The government have come up with plans that are unworkable.

“They are saying unless we get to 55 then we cant not claim our pensions and there is evidence that shows many firefighters do not make it to this age.

“In other jobs you might go to a backroom office but there is not that option for us.”

A Horsham fireman, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “We have had great support from members of the public. There have been lots of people coming along to see us.”
