Chichester District Council chairman Elizabeth Hamilton has officially opened relationship charity Relate’s new offices in the city centre.

The ceremony was performed at the new Market Road base last Wednesday.

Sue Quinn, manger of Relate North and South West Sussex, said: “We are absolutely delighted with our new premises, which Chichester District Council have recently renovated so that we can continue to offer our valuable services to the residents of Chichester.”

Relate has been in Chichester since 1965, when, as the Marriage Guidance Council, it rented rooms in Chapel Street from the Chichester Council of Churches.

The charity then moved to Theatre Lane, where it remained for more than 40 years until the move to Market Street.

Sue added: “Over the years, there has been huge social change and the way we think about relationships has altered.

“Today, the people we support are of all ages, backgrounds and sexual orientations, single, married or living together.

“As well as relationship counselling for individuals and couples, we also offer family counselling, mediation, children and young people’s counselling and our counselling service for secondary school age young people, Relateen. In some areas we can also offer sex therapy.

“We are an independent Sussex charity, members of the national Relate Federation and responsible for raising our own funds.”
