People in Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex are being given the chance to take a free assessment which could add years to their life while they are out doing their shopping in town.

Health advisors from the Northern Prevention Assessment Team are offering NHS Health checks across the area.

NHS Health Checks focus on preventing major causes of illness, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease.

These conditions are often avoidable and manageable, and a health check could help flag up any potential issues before they become a problem.

These are for anyone aged between 40 and 74 who doesn’t have an existing long term health condition.

The 30-minute free check-up assesses people’s risk of developing these serious conditions – so people can make lifestyle changes now to improve their health for the future.

The check will include a blood pressure check, a finger prick blood and cholesterol test, a discussion about family history, as well as smoking status, age and ethnicity, and levels of physical activity.

In Crawley, these will take place on afternoons at Crawley Baptist Church, Crabtree Road, on the first Tuesday of each month starting on February 5; afternoons only at the Bewbush Family Centre in Dorsten Square, Crawley on the second Monday of each month starting on January 14; and all day at Crawley Civic Hall, The Boulevard, on the fourth Thursday of each month beginning on January 24.

One-off sessions will be held in Haywards Heath on January 4, April 4, July 4 and October 4 at the Help Point in Boltro Road; in East Grinstead on February 19, May 21, August 20 and November 19 at the Library and Help Point in West Street and Burgess Hill on March 11, June 10, September 9 and December 9 at the Help Point in Church Walk.

One off venues for venues for Horsham will be confirmed at a later date.

For venues in the Crawley area people should call 01293 585317 to book a health check, and 01444 477191 for venues in the Mid Sussex area.

Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Adults’ Services said: “These are valuable services that have proven benefits in helping catch problems early and I would recommend anyone who is eligible to book themselves an appointment.”
