'˜Greenfield' plans get red light at Wisborough Green

Controversial plans which included a new village doctors surgery for Wisborough Green, 30 '˜extra care' houses and community facilities, have been thrown out by Chichester District Council (CDC).

The proposal for the Stable Field site in Kirdford Road outside the settlement boundary for Wisborough Green, has divided villagers.

Letters of support included a petition from patients of Loxwood doctors surgery who wanted to see a new surgery branch at Wisborough Green.

But there was also a raft of objections led by Wisborough Green parish councillors who said the site was not included in their neighbourhood plan, set in stone by Chichester District Council last summer after three years of extensive consultations with villagers.

Parish councillors said the plans proposed a ‘relatively large’ greenfield development in the rural area, outside the development allocation defined in their neighbourhood plan.

“The number of units equates to half the entire target allocation in the CDC Local Plan and would exceed the planned development capacity by 50 per cent and well beyond that accepted by community consultation.” They said it also ‘completely ignored’ the community’s wish to see development in several small sites.

The plan, they added, appeared to ‘overstate’ the local need for extra care housing and development was unsustainable.
