The pair are a familiar sight walking on Midhurst Common and when word got out of William’s fall, many dog walkers took to social media to ensure Andrew was being cared for.

“I just wanted to thank everyone for their kindness and let people know we are back together,” said William, “I am looking after him again, or rather he is looking after me at the moment.”

His ordeal began when he fell in the Grange car park fracturing his skull.

However William had nothing but praise for the first aiders from the Grange Community Centre who were first on the scene and for ambulance paramedics who took him to hospital.

“I told them I couldn’t go to hospital because Andrew was at home and they so they first took me home, called a neighbour to care for him, called my son and then took me to St Richards.”

His son and daughter-in-law then collected Andrew and cared for him at their Liphook home.

But, said William: “When I returned home I discovered that I was the subject of fame on Facebook because everyone wanted to know the whereabouts of my dog.”

At home in Pitsham Wood, still badly bruised, he said he was now able to take Andrew for short walks on the Common again: “We are trying to go a little further every day and Andrew is nursing me back to health.”
