KTESURFERS learn to ride the waves safely with help from Shoreham Kitesurfing Club.

On Sunday, June 2 from 10-2pm the club met 25 surfers outside the Beach Cafe, Shoreham for a hearty breakfast and then a free safety surfing clinic.

The club offered advice on self recovery, how to launch and land safely and many other important tips when out on the waves.

Its purpose is to keep the kite zone safe for all those using the beach and was aimed at those who have learned to kitesurf but haven’t been in the water for a while.

Jonathan Ellman-Brown, Shoreham Kitesurf Club, said: “Even though there was no wind we managed to teach everybody how to do a self recovery ie; get them and their kit back to the beach if the wind droppped off whilst they were out at sea. Each rider practiced this along with self launching and landing techniques.”

Although there was no real wind the day was beautiful and ideal for a land-based lesson.

Jonathan added: “Teaching safety is the most important part of kitesurfing, without safety lessons there would be a lot more carnage on the beaches, much like the old days when we were figuring this sport out on our own with dangerous kit. Now safety equipment is so incredibly well designed accidents are few and far between.”
