A road was left blocked by a haul of fly tipped waste, including furniture and timber, on Saturday evening.

Photographer Barry Holder told the Middy that it completely blocked the road to Ravenswood Country Inn, where he was working as a wedding photographer.

He said the waste material, which appeared to have been tipped from a moving vehicle, had completely blocked the road.

“Police were called and the road was blocked for over two hours, whilst council workers cleared up the mess, he said.

“Much of the wood contained long nails, that could have caused a severe hazard to vehicles.”

A statement from Sussex Police said: “Shortly after 6.30pm on Saturday February 13, police attended Horsted Lane, Sharpthorne, near East Grinstead, following reports that a large amount of debris had been left in the road.

“It included furniture, garden waste and timber, spread over a distance of some 200 yards near Aldern Wood and preventing traffic from passing.

“The road was closed between Cinder Hill and Morgans Field while Highways Authority engineers attended to clear the blockage.

“The reason for the debris being there was unclear, but may have been due to fly-tipping. As such, it is likely to be investigated by the local council.”
