A Horsham town centre jewellers has been briefly evacuated this morning (Friday October 30) after the shop filled with smoke.

Firefighters were called to Wakefields in West Street at about 10.20am to reports of the fire alarm sounding and smoke issuing from the premises.

However, the incident was due to the shop’s Smoke Cloak - a robbery prevention device that pumps smoke into the store - being activated.

Staff at the jewellers said the device was set off accidentally and there had been no robbery or fire.

They added the shop would reopen shortly.

A fire crew used a positive pressure ventilation fan to help clear the smoke.
