The outdoor gym received funding support from Shoreham Port and staff from the trust port have been able to see the gym in use.

The project makes the most of limited playground space at St Peter’s Community Primary School in Portslade.

Head teacher Michele Lawrie said: “We are delighted and grateful that Shoreham Port have once again enabled us to make good use of limited outdoor space by providing us with the funding to enable us to develop the junior playground.

“We are keen to promote children’s fitness and health and were able to purchase outdoor gym equipment which can be used by all ages.

“The funding also enabled us to develop a quiet area with picnic tables and soft seating and to improve the appearance of the playground with trees and planters.”

Towards the end of last year, Shoreham Port was contacted by St Peter’s about the project and was told it was aimed at providing child-friendly gym equipment for pupils in their main playground.

After a few months of planning, the final designs were ready and Shoreham Port headed over to the school to find out more about it.

In July 2014, the Port had helped the school with a similar project, providing funding for a new outdoor play area, which has been hugely popular with the school’s early years pupils.

Providing gym equipment in the playground meant that the school was able to make the best use of the space available and provide an alternative means of exercise for the school’s junior pupils.

Sara Bassett, finance director and deputy chief executive at Shoreham Port, said:“It was fantastic to see the new gym equipment in place at St Peter’s.

“The playground looks incredibly smart, as well as fun and durable. I hope the playground and gym equipment is enjoyed by many children for years to come.”

As a trust port, Shoreham Port has a duty of care to its stakeholders and as part of its corporate social responsibility strategy, it considers various funding requests each month.

Where possible the Port aims to support charitable causes in the harbour area and says supporting schools is an excellent way to benefit many individuals and have a lasting impact in the community.
