Army day delights pupils

Children traded their school uniforms for army fatigues and camouflage paint when they visited a military base.

About 170 pupils from Thorney Island Community Primary School spent the day at the island’s army base – home to the soldiers of 16 Regiment Royal Artillery.

As well as getting a guided tour of the site, the youngsters also had a chance to get up close and personal with the weapons used by the troops at Baker Barracks – including the state-of-the-art Rapier air defence missile system.

Many of the youngsters have loved ones stationed at the military hub, so it was also an opportunity for them to get a rare glimpse of their parents’ day jobs.

Sergeant James Scott got to see his little girl Alexis, six. He said: ‘She has been bugging me for weeks, asking when the army day is happening.

‘But it’s been great. It’s a chance for the kids to see and understand what it is that we do. That’s really important.’
