The work of a free debt advice centre has been supported by Worthing Community Chest.

A grant of £750 has been approved for the Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre in Worthing, to assist clients with urgent needs while dealing with debt managing procedures.

CAP is a debt counselling charity giving free specialised advice. It was founded in 1996 and now has just over 300 debt centres across the UK.

Kevin Hodges, Worthing CAP Debt Centre manager, said: “Each centre is self-funded and operates in partnership with a local church, using the resources and volunteers available.

“Our service is free to anyone who wishes to work with us. Our unique home visits enable us to reach the poorest and least privileged in society, many of whom are often under the most severe pressure.

“Our debt counselling service is available to everyone but is so often used by the more vulnerable and marginalised.

“Many of our clients are among the poorest in society, often feeling isolated, stressed or depressed – at times suicidal due to the huge burden of debt.”

The Worthing CAP Debt Centre is run in partnership with New Life Church in Durrington.

Mr Hodges said the team had to work hard to seek grants and funding in the area. The recent application to Worthing Community Chest had been specifically for the purpose of client assistance.

He added: “Local support is so important to us, as we wouldn’t be able to offer this service without the generosity of local organisations and individuals.”

The aim of CAP is to give people weighed down by debt someone to turn to and to offer hope, even when the situation might seem impossible.

The trained debt centre team offers a listening ear in the privacy of clients’ own homes and provides a real solution to their debts. In addition, Jubilee Community Church in Worthing runs the free CAP Money Course to teach budgeting skills.
