Police are appealing for witnesses to an unprovoked attack in the High Street, East Grinstead on Saturday (July 14).
The victim was putting out his rubbish between 8am and 9am into his communal bin in an alleyway behind his flat when a man approached him.
The 32-year-old victim moved out of the way but the suspect grabbed and punched him and cut him on the arm, leaving two slash marks from an unknown weapon.
The victim managed to push the suspect away and got back into his flat.
The suspect is described as white, approximately 5ft 10in, between 35-40, with a distinctive goatee beard.
Detective Constable Andy Robinson said: “The victim was treated by paramedics and is obviously shocked by the attack. There appears to be no motive as nothing was stolen and we believe this to be a random attack. It happened in a public place first thing in the morning in the area of a busy high street.”
