Police are investigating an allegation of a serious sexual assault after a 13-year-old girl told her family that she was the victim of a rape in Crawley around three weeks ago.

According to a police statement, the victim said that she was walking along an alleyway next to Desmond Avenue when she was approached by a man who asked her if she was ok and then dragged her into some nearby bushes and raped her.

Detective Inspector Mark Cullimore from West Sussex CID said: “This is a distressing incident and specially trained officers are with the young girl to give her support and find out more details about the attack. Unfortunately we don’t have an exact date as to when this happened but we know it was about three weeks ago at around 5pm.

“Officers will be making local enquiries over the weekend and I would appeal to anyone who has any information that could assist them to please get in touch. Call 101 quoting serial 879 of 23/5 or alternatively you can leave an anonymous message with the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 111 555.”

The suspect is described as white, late 30s, 5’ 8” tall, with dark hair and stubble. He was wearing a long beige coat and wellingtons.

The teenager’s family contacted police on Thursday (23 May).
