Police are appealing for witnesses after a man tried to break into the home of a pensioner.

The victim was woken by a loud noise and lights outside his home in Mill Road, Steyning, shortly after 2am on Wednesday 2 October.

The 85-year-old got out of bed and hid behind a desk as a man forced open a window and tried unsuccessfully to get in.

The victim’s camper van outside the address had been broken into and searched but nothing had been stolen.

Operation Magpie was launched by Sussex Police to tackle burglary across the county.

Detective Constable Alison Hutchings said: “This was a frightening incident for the victim who has been left shaken by what happened.

“I would like to speak to anyone who saw or heard any part of the incident, no matter how insignificant you might think the information is.

“Incidents like this are extremely rare but I am keen to speak to anyone who might have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area in the last few weeks.”

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting serial 472 of 2 October or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
