Two bogus water company workers called at the home of an elderly couple in Three Bridges, Crawley, and stole £375 cash.
The men claimed there was a fracture in the water pipe in the road and the water could be infected. They walked into the home in The Birches at 2.30pm on Wednesday 5 December and asked them to turn on the taps.
While the couple were distracted, they went into the bedroom and stole cash from the couple’s wallet and purse before leaving the house.
The first suspect is described as male. aged in his 40s, 6ft 2in, well built with short fair hair and was wearing a green and black workman’s jacket and black trousers.
The second suspect is a male, also aged in his 40s, 5ft 10in with short dark blond hair and a full beard. He also wore the same style clothes as his accomplice. They both spoke with southern accents.
Detective Constable Julie Chambers said: “This was a callous crime against an elderly couple. Anyone with information or may have seen these two suspects in the area should contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 0973 of 05/12.”
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Always use a chain on your door if you are answering to someone you don’t know and don’t be afraid to ask to see some ID which you can look at properly. If you are in doubt, don’t let them in and phone the company they claim to be from using a phone number from a telephone directory. If you are suspicious then call police on 101.”
